The History Of Wigs: Iconic Wig Moments In Black History

When it comes to Black hair, the possibilities for styling are endless especially when it comes to wigs. As part of our Black History Month series, we're looking into the history of wigs and iconic wig moments in Black history.

The Supremes' Bouffant Wigs

Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard aka The Supremes were iconic in more ways than one. Not only was their music well loved and made history still very relevant today, their style was just as amazing. Their hair in particular, often styled into gravity-defying bouffants were wigs and became a popular style replicated by other women of the era.

Régine's Wigs In Living Single

Régine, Kim Fields' character on the 90s show 'Living Single' knew fashion and beauty inside and out, always making sure she looked impeccable from head to toe. With a variety of hairstyles, many of them wigs, Régine showed us that safely taking  risks with our hair through wigs could be fun.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki has had so many iconic wig moments, there was no way we couldn't include her in this lineup. From her bubblegum pink, full-fringed wig for her Pink Friday album cover to her style for her collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki's never been afraid to experiment with her hair leading to some incredible looks.

Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B in WAP

Not only is WAP a stunning example of talented women confidently taking agency over their bodies and sex lives, its music video showcased some stunning visuals and of course, our favourite part of this were the wigs. We especially loved Cardi's chain linked look created by the incredibly talented Tokyo Stylez.
