Gen-Z, TikTok and Wigs: A Love Story

Gen-Z, TikTok and Wigs: A Love Story

When ready-to-wear wigs came into the market, they were a long long way from looking even remotely real. In 2022, wig construction, installation, and culture have evolved so much that wigs have become style staples - you really can’t escape them... and Gen-Z is taking wigs to the next level!

Visual Learning and the Fall of Gatekeeping

TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have allowed Gen-Z hair gurus to show us their ever-improving techniques. These (mostly) self-taught experts braid, lay, spray and slay wigs effortlessly, whilst giving their audiences a step-by-step breakdown of their amazing methods - we've learnt a couple handy tips and tricks via social media ourselves!

Gone are the days when we would keep information to ourselves just so that we could ‘outshine’ the next girl. It’s all about putting everyone on game.

Everyone is an Influencer

It’s like the chicken and the egg - who do we have to thank for the groundbreaking ideas and styles we now see? Is it celebrities and their stylists, or is it the ever-experimenting girls and guys on social media? It’s hard to tell!

It’s just as easy for Kellon Deryck to share his A-list tips as it is for a Gen-Z wig maker on TikTok to blow up into fame and for a technique that’s never been seen before. Talent truly shines, no matter where it comes from... everyone's an influencer!

Hollywood is Wigging Out!

In 2010, Nicki Minaj's outlandish hair on the red carpet set tongues wagging and blogs going wild. 10 years later, wigs are almost embraced by the whole of Hollywood and everyone beyond! Gen-Z have been influential in not letting wig culture up - they embrace it, dictate it and teach it at all times.

The Kardashian-Jenner Clan is All Aboard this Train

This wave hasn’t escaped the girlies with straighter textures either. Lots of non-black celebs are now wearing, selling, and buying wigs more openly, including the mega Gen-Z influencer Kylie Jenner. Her stylist, Tokyo Stylez is responsible for all 100 of her frankly stunning wigs. The rest of the Kardashians love to switch up their hair with wigs too - it's a trend that’s here to stay, pushed out by some of our favourite Gen-Z influencers.

It's super exciting to see how Gen-Z is elevating wig culture. It’s a fast-growing business worth about 2.3 billion dollars and set to grow to grow exponentially in the coming years... so there's clearly a huge demand for more great hair ideas and inventions. Check out our previous blog on the wig industry's worth here!
