A Brief History of Wigs

Ancient Egypt

The very first wig was discovered in ancient Egypt. Egyptians wore wigs for a variety of purposes including style, protecting their shaved heads from the sun, as well as to cover hair loss.

17th & 18th Century

Over time, wigs rose in popularity, especially in Europe. Wigs were seen as a luxury and worn by mostly aristocrats, while those who couldn’t afford wigs would style their natural hair in a way that emulated the wig styles of the time.

19th Century

Although wigs had fallen out of popularity in the 19th century, U.S. Presidents John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe are documented to have worn them.

20th Century

The 1950s brought a reemergence of wigs for women, thanks to retailers like Frederick’s of Hollywood, allowing wearers to recreate popular voluminous or ultra-long hairstyles of the decade.

Present
