How to Ease Your way Into Wig-Wearing

The whole process can be a bit daunting, right? Entering the new world of wigs with nothing more than just a few YouTube reviews of Ali Express vendors - we get it. Good news - you don’t have to jump straight into wearing full wig units, you can take small baby steps... ponytails, clip ins, puffs and faux fringes to ease your way in! Let's have a look out our options in detail...

Ponytails

Ponytails are a fun and friendly way to find your feet in the world of wonderful hair extensions and wigs. With ponytails, you can have the luxury of embracing your natural hair before you deep dive into hair extensions! For a slick ponytail, simply comb your natural hair in an upward motion and tie it up in a bun. Purchase a ponytail extension piece, attach this to your natural hair et voila! If you’re looking for somewhere to purchase some luscious ponytail hairpieces, we’d recommend taking a trip to Ruka’s online store - thank us later! If you’re happy to spend a bit more change, take a look at Insert Name Here’s ponytail clip-ins

Clip-Ins

Another great way to ease your way into the world of wigs is to experiment with clip-ins. If you’re curious to see how long hair, different curl patters, or various colours will look on you (we think you’d look great in anything, by the way!), you’ll find clip-ins to be super helpful. Why? Because if you don’t like the look of your new style, you can quickly remove it without having to spend hundreds as you would've done with a brand new wig unit! It may even point you in the right direction of the type of wig you’d be looking to buy in the future. Radswan sell a range of ‘Radclips’ - four different clip-in hair pieces in various colours and curl patterns to give you a better idea of the look you think suits you best. You can also opt-in for clip-in puffs for an Afro-hair-inspired clip-in, available online at Better Length.

Faux Fringes

Fringes and bangs are one of the most loved hairstyles across the globe. Problem? They require the cutting of one’s hair to achieve the look - and that’s a risk many of us are not willing to take! And this is where faux fringe’s come in to save the day. We’re not sure if anyone’s really calling them ‘winge’s’, as the Cosmopolitan suggests, but they're definitely a useful clip-in to have in your hair drawer. We personally love how they can offer the fierce fringe look, minus the commitment! With clip-in faux fringes, they can easily be 'trimmed, colour matched, styled and personalised. Easilocks sell versatile, affordable fringes in several different colours, styles textures.  Fringe extensions are a type of 'hair topper' - for more detailed information regarding hair toppers, check out our previous blog dedicated to this!

Before you start

What you need

Get this right
from the start

Most fit problems trace back to how the measurement was taken, not the number itself.

A soft fabric measuring tape — metal tapes give inaccurate readings.
With or without wig cap? If you plan to wear one, measure with it on.
Snug, not tight. The tape should sit firmly but not indent your skin.
A mirror or a friend. A second set of hands improves accuracy.
Circumference

Step 01 · Primary measurement

The anchor

Circumference

Place the tape around your head at the hairline — approximately ¼ inch above your eyebrows and ears. Bring it around the back at the base of your skull. Keep the tape parallel to the floor the entire way around.

Why it mattersThis is the primary anchor. When you're between sizes, circumference is always the tiebreaker.
Common mistakeTipping the tape up at the back. Keep it level all the way around.

Front to Nape

Step 02 · Secondary measurement

Nape comfort

Front to Nape

Start at your natural hairline at the center of your forehead. Run the tape back over the crown to the nape of your neck where your hairline ends. Let the tape follow the curve of your head.

Why it mattersDetermines nape comfort over a full day. If slightly short, you'll feel it by afternoon.
Common mistakeStarting from the scalp instead of the hairline. Always begin at the hairline.

Ear to Ear

Step 03 · Secondary measurement

Front stability

Ear to Ear

Begin at the top of one ear where it starts to curve. Bring the tape up and over the crown to the same point on the opposite ear. The tape runs across the top of your head, not around it.

Why it mattersControls whether the front stays in place. If too small, the wig will gradually ride back over the course of the day.
Common mistakeStarting at the earlobe instead of the top curve. This adds length unnecessarily.

Understanding your size

Your cap has a range

The adjustable back strap gives you roughly half an inch of flexibility in each direction.
If you're between sizes, sizing up always works — a slightly larger cap adjusted with the strap fits better than a slightly small one.
A full day of wear tells you more than 10 minutes. Nape comfort reveals itself over hours.

On comfort and security

A well-fitting wig should feel comfortable — not tight, not grippy.

"Comfortable is correct.
Tight is not security."
