Two synthetic wigs for synthetic styling tops and maintenance tips advice

Life-Saving Synthetic Hair Maintenance Tips

Synthetic wigs are in again and everyone’s trying to get themselves a cheap and cheerful show-stopper to glam up their wig collection. With the likes of Shein, Labello Beauty and other popular synthetic-retailers marketing the versatility of synthetic units, more and more wig-wearers are becoming attracted to the idea. If you've succumb to the very-valid temptation of synthetic wigs (or feel like you’re about to soon!) then continue reading, we have a few vital tips to keep your wig in tip-top conditon, and therefore lasting much longer!

1. Your Synthetic Wig is Not Invited to the Sleepover

Repeat after us - you synthetic wig is not invited to the sleepover! As much as you’d probably want to keep your wig on overnight for whichever reason, we hate to break it to you, but this is not a good idea. While sleeping, there will be a lot friction of fricition between your wig and your pillow case. This friction will surely 'deteriorate the fibers and cause a loss of hair over time', and you'll probably wake up with an unpleasant frizzy and dry and matted wig in the morning! If you have no other option and your synthetic wig just has to be invited to the sleepover, then we'd suggest opting in for a silk pillowcase and bonnet to restrict the friction and the moisture stripped from the wig. 2. Your Synthetic Wig is Not Invited to the Gym Sesh

Or any other sweat-producing activity for that matter. Synthetic wigs, unfortunately, are not as breathable as human hair. Because of this, they will retain the sweat, moisture and not to mention, any odours from strainous activities you partake in. Eventually, your synthetic wig will matte up if you continue to bring it along to such activities without regular washing. The more sweat and product build up, the easier it will be for your synthetic wig to matte up and harder for it to revert to it's bouncy and radiant state. To keep your wig around for longer and get your value for money, keep your wig away from activities that involve sweat and avoid wearing them for long periods of time.

3. Save Your Wig with Excellent and Regular Maintenance

Having a superb maintenance routine will be the difference between having your synthetic tresses for 1 week compared to 1 year. We’d recommend your routine looking a bit like this:

  1. Comb out your wig very gently with a sturdy detangling brush - ensure you start from the bottom and work your way up
  2. Rinse the hair with lukewarm water. Make sure it's not hot... or you will witness your wig melt/damage right infront of your eyes!
  3. Shampoo time! Ensure you use a sulfate and paraben-free shampoo.
  4. Rinse off the shampoo and condition your wig
  5. Lastly, rinse off the conditioner and air dry the wig after gently combing it out with a tangle teezer, bottom to top again.

Before you start

What you need

Get this right
from the start

Most fit problems trace back to how the measurement was taken, not the number itself.

A soft fabric measuring tape — metal tapes give inaccurate readings.
With or without wig cap? If you plan to wear one, measure with it on.
Snug, not tight. The tape should sit firmly but not indent your skin.
A mirror or a friend. A second set of hands improves accuracy.
Circumference

Step 01 · Primary measurement

The anchor

Circumference

Place the tape around your head at the hairline — approximately ¼ inch above your eyebrows and ears. Bring it around the back at the base of your skull. Keep the tape parallel to the floor the entire way around.

Why it mattersThis is the primary anchor. When you're between sizes, circumference is always the tiebreaker.
Common mistakeTipping the tape up at the back. Keep it level all the way around.

Front to Nape

Step 02 · Secondary measurement

Nape comfort

Front to Nape

Start at your natural hairline at the center of your forehead. Run the tape back over the crown to the nape of your neck where your hairline ends. Let the tape follow the curve of your head.

Why it mattersDetermines nape comfort over a full day. If slightly short, you'll feel it by afternoon.
Common mistakeStarting from the scalp instead of the hairline. Always begin at the hairline.

Ear to Ear

Step 03 · Secondary measurement

Front stability

Ear to Ear

Begin at the top of one ear where it starts to curve. Bring the tape up and over the crown to the same point on the opposite ear. The tape runs across the top of your head, not around it.

Why it mattersControls whether the front stays in place. If too small, the wig will gradually ride back over the course of the day.
Common mistakeStarting at the earlobe instead of the top curve. This adds length unnecessarily.

Understanding your size

Your cap has a range

The adjustable back strap gives you roughly half an inch of flexibility in each direction.
If you're between sizes, sizing up always works — a slightly larger cap adjusted with the strap fits better than a slightly small one.
A full day of wear tells you more than 10 minutes. Nape comfort reveals itself over hours.

On comfort and security

A well-fitting wig should feel comfortable — not tight, not grippy.

"Comfortable is correct.
Tight is not security."
