Used Wigs: to Sell or Not to Sell?

With the rise of ethics concerns regarding human hair sourcing, the sustainable practice of wig-reselling has become more popular amongst eco-conscious consumers. There are, however, a few concerns about this practice - is it sanitary? Are there dedicated platforms to sell my wigs? And all-in-all, is it actually worth it? We’ve answered all your concerns below - continue reading for the scoop!

Is it Sanitary?

A common question is, 'how can this be a sanitary practice if someone else has worn the wig?!'. We get it - dandruff, nits and scalp sweat... not an attractive sell-point. Well, just like buying second-hand clothes, there are ways to avoid any unwarranted bacterial infections. We’d recommend always washing your wigs as soon as they arrive. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and work your hands into the inner parts of the wig, and especially the wig cap. You could also completely replace the wig cap. Keep hair conditioner in for just over an hour to revive your tresses - this will also ensure the unit is squeaky clean. When it’s time to wear your freshly-washed wig, we’d advise wearing a wig cap beneath as an additional sanitary measure. Now you’re good to go!

Where to Sell?

The popularity of wig-selling has seen an increase in several marketplaces following suit . One of our favourite and most trusted sites is Silk or Lace. They offer a super easy ‘sell your wig’ service, where sellers can list their wigs for a desired price. Other popular online marketplaces to sell wigs include Depop and eBay!

Is it Worth It?

So, your hygiene concerns have been put to rest, you know where to re-sell your wigs, but now your thinking... is it worth it? Well, we have three reasons as to why we think it’s good practice!

  1. Promotes sustainability: Anything to do with re-selling, re-using, recycling is a win in our eyes. Single-use practices should be abandoned and this is the core of wig-reselling.
  2. Financial opportunities: Wig sellers can make some extra cash! Throwing away the wig or keeping it tucked under your bed will earn you £0!
  3. A cheaper alternative: Second-hand wigs are significantly cheaper than newly-purchased wigs - an opportunity to save over £100? Go for it!

Before you start

What you need

Get this right
from the start

Most fit problems trace back to how the measurement was taken, not the number itself.

A soft fabric measuring tape — metal tapes give inaccurate readings.
With or without wig cap? If you plan to wear one, measure with it on.
Snug, not tight. The tape should sit firmly but not indent your skin.
A mirror or a friend. A second set of hands improves accuracy.
Circumference

Step 01 · Primary measurement

The anchor

Circumference

Place the tape around your head at the hairline — approximately ¼ inch above your eyebrows and ears. Bring it around the back at the base of your skull. Keep the tape parallel to the floor the entire way around.

Why it mattersThis is the primary anchor. When you're between sizes, circumference is always the tiebreaker.
Common mistakeTipping the tape up at the back. Keep it level all the way around.

Front to Nape

Step 02 · Secondary measurement

Nape comfort

Front to Nape

Start at your natural hairline at the center of your forehead. Run the tape back over the crown to the nape of your neck where your hairline ends. Let the tape follow the curve of your head.

Why it mattersDetermines nape comfort over a full day. If slightly short, you'll feel it by afternoon.
Common mistakeStarting from the scalp instead of the hairline. Always begin at the hairline.

Ear to Ear

Step 03 · Secondary measurement

Front stability

Ear to Ear

Begin at the top of one ear where it starts to curve. Bring the tape up and over the crown to the same point on the opposite ear. The tape runs across the top of your head, not around it.

Why it mattersControls whether the front stays in place. If too small, the wig will gradually ride back over the course of the day.
Common mistakeStarting at the earlobe instead of the top curve. This adds length unnecessarily.

Understanding your size

Your cap has a range

The adjustable back strap gives you roughly half an inch of flexibility in each direction.
If you're between sizes, sizing up always works — a slightly larger cap adjusted with the strap fits better than a slightly small one.
A full day of wear tells you more than 10 minutes. Nape comfort reveals itself over hours.

On comfort and security

A well-fitting wig should feel comfortable — not tight, not grippy.

"Comfortable is correct.
Tight is not security."
