Wig Laces - What Different Types are There?

On top of there being several types of wig constructions, curl patterns and lengths, there are also various types of wig lace we also need to be familiar with! We're highlighting the most popular few but keep in mind there are dozens of types of wig lace due to the lack of standardization in wig manufacturing.

From French and Swiss to HD and Crystal, we’ve got you covered on all-things lace. Sit back and enjoy!

1. French Lace

French lace is a slightly thicker and durable lace option. It uses a strong material’ and is often characterised by lighter lace knots to create an ‘undetectable’ look. Its durable lace allows one to use a wig with French lace for a much longer period of time, especially when compared to other lace options.

2. Swiss Lace

Unlike French lace, Swiss lace is a lot more delicate and fragile. Wig wearers need to be a lot more gentle with this lace! It’s the most popular lace used on wigs as they are 'soft to touch’, easy to customise and allow for a more seamless, undetectable look compared to the likes of French lace.

3. HD Lace

Often more costly than its other lace counterparts, HD lace has seen its popularity soar in the past few years. It has been said that the popular lace, however, is infact not a great option if you plan on wearing the HD lace wig daily. Due to it’s thin and delicate nature, one should refrain from selecting this as their run-around wig! Special occasions only, please!

4. Crystal Lace

Quite new to the market, crystal lace is described as the most ‘high-end lace material’ compared to other lace materials for wigs. They’re said to be more durable than their counterparts and less detectable. The lace material grew in popularity after the wig retailer, Genius Wigsreleased a 2-in-1 reversible wig that can be easily transformed from a straight texture to curly. They named the lace of this wig ‘crystal lace’ and it has seen several YouTubers record reviews. Genius Wigs also sent alternative lace swatches to the YouTubers to prove just how amazing crystal lace is compared to the former lace materials mentioned!

We know this can get pretty confusing, so here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing your next wig: if you’re looking for a daily, run-around wig, we’d suggest buying a wig that features French lace. If you’re looking to buy a high-quality wig for special occasions (and you’re willing to spend a pretty penny on it), we’d suggest going for the higher-end laces such as HD lace. In terms of lace transparency, we’d always suggest bleaching knots, tinting your lace to match your skin tone and plucking your frontal/closure for the best seamless look. Happy wig shopping!

Before you start

What you need

Get this right
from the start

Most fit problems trace back to how the measurement was taken, not the number itself.

A soft fabric measuring tape — metal tapes give inaccurate readings.
With or without wig cap? If you plan to wear one, measure with it on.
Snug, not tight. The tape should sit firmly but not indent your skin.
A mirror or a friend. A second set of hands improves accuracy.
Circumference

Step 01 · Primary measurement

The anchor

Circumference

Place the tape around your head at the hairline — approximately ¼ inch above your eyebrows and ears. Bring it around the back at the base of your skull. Keep the tape parallel to the floor the entire way around.

Why it mattersThis is the primary anchor. When you're between sizes, circumference is always the tiebreaker.
Common mistakeTipping the tape up at the back. Keep it level all the way around.

Front to Nape

Step 02 · Secondary measurement

Nape comfort

Front to Nape

Start at your natural hairline at the center of your forehead. Run the tape back over the crown to the nape of your neck where your hairline ends. Let the tape follow the curve of your head.

Why it mattersDetermines nape comfort over a full day. If slightly short, you'll feel it by afternoon.
Common mistakeStarting from the scalp instead of the hairline. Always begin at the hairline.

Ear to Ear

Step 03 · Secondary measurement

Front stability

Ear to Ear

Begin at the top of one ear where it starts to curve. Bring the tape up and over the crown to the same point on the opposite ear. The tape runs across the top of your head, not around it.

Why it mattersControls whether the front stays in place. If too small, the wig will gradually ride back over the course of the day.
Common mistakeStarting at the earlobe instead of the top curve. This adds length unnecessarily.

Understanding your size

Your cap has a range

The adjustable back strap gives you roughly half an inch of flexibility in each direction.
If you're between sizes, sizing up always works — a slightly larger cap adjusted with the strap fits better than a slightly small one.
A full day of wear tells you more than 10 minutes. Nape comfort reveals itself over hours.

On comfort and security

A well-fitting wig should feel comfortable — not tight, not grippy.

"Comfortable is correct.
Tight is not security."
